Children love surprises. That’s why this is the perfect time of year to surprise your little one with an unexpected and spontaneous adventure. Children don’t need Disney World to have fun. As a matter of fact, they can learn something as well as have fun by spending a little time at some very interesting places, all within Fairfield County, and the price is right for all the following places because they’re always free for children.
Living in Fairfield County, Conn., means that a day trip adventure can be a car ride, train ride or a steamboat trip away. It means discovering secret rabbit houses, a trip to the zoo, or a ride on a carousel. Surprise a child with a day trip adventure and you create a memory for a lifetime.
Take a little boy or girl to the Fairfield Fire Station and watch their eyes light up as they stand ever so small next to a really big fire truck. Since some towns have volunteer firefighters, it’s best to visit towns and cities with a full-time staff. Not only will these firefighters explain how the fire truck works and the need for fire prevention, but many fire departments present little ones with fire hats or badges. A visit to the local police station also proves to be an exciting outing for children who may never have seen a policeman up close and personal. Most police stations will also show children the police car and explain the various apparatus to them.
It’s easy to drive to the nearest train station in Stratford, Fairfield or Bridgeport and watch the trains come and go because of our rail system. For a special adventure, buy an adult ticket, children under 12 ride free all year long, and head to New York City for Central Park or a baseball game. What is so special about this is that you don’t have to plan months in advance to turn an ordinary day into an extraordinary day.
When was the last time you visited the Beardsley Zoo in Bridgeport? With more than 300 animals ranging from Siberian tigers to giant anteaters, this zoo is one of Connecticut’s great family attractions. While there, you can dine at the Peacock Café and children can take a ride on the beautiful carousel. Oh, how the youngsters love to visit this zoo. It brings so many of the photos of the animals they have seen on the pages of their colorful books to life.
For a real surprise treat, drive up Route 25 to Newtown. There’s a little park next to the Newtown Police Station called the The Pleasance. There, walk down a garden path until you come to a delightful little bunny house where children can meet the likes of Peter Rabbit and all the adorable rabbit characters that make their way into the child-sized little rabbit house. What fun to discover the treasures inside this adorable house!
Since the Sikorsky Memorial Airport has airplanes of all sizes taking off and coming in for a landing, it has a special viewing area where cars can park for the best view. Pack a lunch; then sit back and watch how excited children get when they hear the approach of a plane, spot it coming in and see it touch down right before their eyes. The best time of course is the busiest time, and that is usually in the middle of day when Cessnas fly in as well as some pretty big planes.
Buy a child-sized captain’s hat and present it on a warm sunny day to your little one. Then head over to the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Steamboat Company where an adventure on the water awaits the delight of many a child. Just watching the boat load and unload is exciting, but hopping on board for a trip across the Sound is an adventure that jump starts a child’s imagination and takes him or her on a trip that may take only one day, but will last a lifetime.
These are but a few of the many trips available for day tripping adventures. Surprise a child and you may end up surprised yourself.
